Distance matters to weak ties in remote workplaces

Lacking of awareness in remote workplaces can influence people’s relationship to their colleagues. With a five-day experience sampling method and semi-structured interview, we found the absence of social cues in remote work worsens people’s prior negative impressions and to form polarized perceptions of their weak ties. Understanding these dynamics helps design effective communication tools for remote workers to maintain awareness of weak ties while working from home. (Appeared in ACM GROUP’22)
