Takuji Narumi

Professor,
Graduate School of Information Science and Technology,
The University of Tokyo

Takuji Narumi received his B.E. from the Department of Systems Innovation, School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, in 2006, his M.A. from the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies in 2008, and his Ph.D. in Engineering from the Graduate School of Engineering in 2011. After serving as Assistant Professor, Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Department of Mechano-Informatics, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, he became Professor in 2026.
He conceive of the self as a "Sympoietic Self": an open network in which diverse autonomous processes, spanning metabolic and immune systems, sensory and motor systems, cognitive systems, and social relationships, mutually constrain one another through matter, energy, information, and environmental context, and thereby jointly produce a dynamic stability. HIs research aims to elucidate the mechanisms and principles of "Sympoietic Reality," the subjective experience that emerges from interactions among autonomous processes within this network, and to develop its engineering applications. Specifically, He have proposed and investigated cross-modal interfaces that evoke a rich variety of multisensory experiences from limited sensory stimulation, as well as "Ghost Engineering," which harnesses the interplay between body and mind to transform human cognition, behavior, and abilities.
