With the viscera

Exploring the reality that emerges from the body's inner workings, such as interoception and emotion, and rethinking our relationship with autonomous systems that do not simply obey our will.

Reality emerges not only from our perception of the external world but also from the inner workings of the body, such as visceral sensations and emotions. The heart and the gut are part of our own bodies, yet they are autonomous systems that we cannot directly control by conscious will. Even so, we live alongside them, sensing cues such as hunger or a racing heart and engaging with them indirectly through actions like eating, resting, or steadying our breath. Through research on modulating satiety, evoking emotions by transforming facial expressions, and interacting with the viscera, we seek to understand how interoception and emotion work and to connect these insights to well-being. We believe that the question of how to coexist with autonomous systems that we cannot directly control, yet which are deeply tied to who we are, also offers a starting point for envisioning new relationships with AI that acts autonomously.
